Fief · a heraldic atlas for iPhone

You don't tick off a country. You conquer it.

Fief counts the time you really spend in each country and each French département. Stay long enough and the territory is yours. Everything is worked out on your iPhone.

Engraving: a bird's-eye landscape of villages, hills and rivers, with an hourglass on the horizon.

The bigger it is, the longer you stay.

The time required grows with the area, and it adds up from one stay to the next: one hour in Luxembourg, then another two days later, count just as much as two hours in a row.

The exact sum: 0.04 × √(area in km²) hours, never less than an hour, never more than seven days. The app's atlas covers 258 countries and territories and the 101 French départements, overseas included.

Three tiers, three hatchings.

Each heraldic tincture has its own engraved hatching: the Petra Sancta code, invented to print coats of arms without colour. Fief entrusts your tiers to it. On the map, whatever you have never set foot in stays veiled in parchment, and the mist lifts wherever you go.

What does not count.

A conquest is only worth something if it is true. Fief sets aside anything that is not real presence, and shows you why.

  1. Article I

Flying over is not setting foot

Nothing counts on a plane, neither time nor crossing: a Paris–Rome flight gives you neither Switzerland nor northern Italy.

  2. Article II

    Moving the clock moves nothing

Durations come from the iPhone's monotonic clock, not the displayed time. Changing the phone's time does not add a minute.

  3. Article III

A simulated position is set aside

A position made up by software, supplied by an accessory, too imprecise, or an impossible journey: it credits nothing.

  4. Article IV

    A VPN changes nothing

The country comes from GPS and maps built into the app, never from your IP address or your iPhone's settings.

  5. Article V

    A restart gives no gifts

Across a restart, time only counts if the time was verified on both sides. Otherwise the stay is marked “interruption” and is worth zero.

  6. Article VI

    A border does not stretch

At most 24 h is credited between two positions. When you change territory, the first one gets 30 min at most.

It can all be checked: Settings, “Counting details”, lists each interval kept or set aside, with its reason.

From Wanderer to Emperor.

Each territory earns you renown according to its tier. Twelve titles: the first come within days, the last take years of travel. A title credits no time; it only reflects what has been counted.

  2. Squire3 renown
  3. Knight10 renown

Thirty-three reasons to set off again.

Fifteen hand-picked quests and one for each French region. They give your trips a purpose and unlock ornaments for your blazon, never time.

Something to play between stays.

None of this credits any time: conquest stays reserved for those who actually move.

The herald's riddle

A silhouette appears, blurred, then sharpens. Recognise the territory early for 3 points, then 2, then 1. Eight riddles per game, from world countries, départements or your own lands; a daily riddle, the same for everyone, and free games.

Weekly challenges

Three new goals every Monday, the same for everyone: six hours of presence, three territories to advance, new ground… They are worked out from time already credited.

Engraving: an armoured gauntlet thrown to the ground.

Challenges between friends

Throw down the gauntlet with a simple link, no server: a scoreboard to beat on a riddle, or “this territory by that date”. The link only carries nicknames and scores, and your friend needs Fief.

The poster and the year card

Your blazon, your world map and your figures as a 9:16 image. Every year, the review: new lands, conquests, days on campaign, favourite land. No position, no date of passage.

Plus a wax seal for every conquest, a fanfare for a title, a horn for a quest. Effects and haptics are set separately; the silent switch mutes the sounds.

Fief, screen by screen

Your fief does not leave your iPhone.

To count, Fief has to know where you are. That is exactly why it all happens on the spot: no account, no position server, no ads, no analytics.

Engraving: an iPhone lying on an old map, with a padlock and a wax seal.

What stays on your iPhone

  • Your positions: raw positions are erased after 90 days, the counted time stays
  • Your conquests, titles, quests and settings
  • Working out the country and département: the atlas is built into the app
  • JSON export and full erasure, at any time, in settings

What uses the network

The signed time
The only call Fief makes: a random number goes out, a signed time comes back. No data, no position, no cookie.
The base map
Map tiles come from Apple Maps and are loaded by iOS, as in any map app. Counting does not need them.
What you share
A poster or a challenge link only leaves when you send it yourself.

“Always” or “While Using”?

With “Always”, your stays count even when the app is closed, through significant location changes, without continuous GPS. With “While Using”, Fief only counts while the app is on screen. It's your choice, and you can change your mind.
